Why Hire A Genealogist? (Part 9)

Finding Family Still in the Old Country!

Andy Warhol was once quoted as saying, “I come from nowhere!”  That’s not the case because everyone comes from somewhere.  Even if you lived in the town, street, house all your life at some point one of your ancestors came from somewhere else.

The advent of home DNA kits has sparked this renewed interest in traveling to where our ancestors came from.  It’s great for tourism, but does it give you an accurate picture of where your ancestors were from.  You may be heading to right region, but not be in the correct town or village.  Before taking that once in a lifetime trip, a genealogist can help you narrow down where your family comes that the DNA can’t.  A genealogist may help find long lost relative who still live in the town.  Wouldn’t it be nice to say you not only traveled to the town of your ancestors, but got to meet some of them too?

The best advice is to hire a genealogist before making any travel plan.  Genealogist are good at making these connections, but it takes time.  At a minimum, consult with a genealogist at least 6 months before considering a trip.  The best genealogist can’t find these connections while you are heading to airport to embark on your trip.  It can also help for you to establish a connection with these long-lost family members before knocking on their door to meet.
